What would you like your character's tag to be?: pete lattimer

Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present): Pete grew up in North Canton, Ohio, as the youngest of two children. He has one older sister, Jeannie, who is deaf and who taught Pete how to read lips while they were growing up. His father's name is unknown, but both he and his mother, Jane Lattimer, played formative roles in Pete's future. Pete's father was a firefighter, and the two enjoyed a very close relationship until Pete was twelve years old. He had developed a very sensitive intuition, what he would later refer to as "vibes", and one night his intuition told him he would never see his father again. The vibes scared him at this age and so he didn't tell anyone about what he felt. That night his dad died in a fire. From that moment on, Pete swore he would never ignore his vibes again. His mother seemed to be the average, caring mom type; it wasn't until Pete was an adult working for the Warehouse that he discovered that she, too, worked as a Regent, and that he was always encountering the Warehouse from an early age.

As a teenager and a young adult, Pete developed a pretty serious drinking problem, and is now a recovering alcoholic. The turning point for him was when he was driving drunk and hit a tree. While he walked away from the accident without a scratch, his buddy Dave who was riding shotgun at the time was thrown from the car and broke both of his legs. Pete swore never to take another drink again, and immediately enrolled in AA.

As an adult, Pete entered the US Marines, where he met and married his first wife, Amanda. They had a shotgun wedding in Vegas, which soon fell apart due to faults on both sides. He was later enlisted as an agent of the United States Secret Service under the Presidential Protective Division. It was while on duty in 2009 that he first met Myka Bering, and the two unwittingly worked together to recover an artifact for Warehouse 13. That night, Mrs. Frederic would pay Pete a visit, delivering him an invitation and a mysterious set of coordinates that would lead him to the Warehouse... and from there into a world of Endless Wonder.

Pete was hired on as an agent for Warehouse 13, an incredibly secret organization that hunts down mysterious artifacts across the globe that hold unusual powers. It is the job of Warehouse agents to "bag and tag" these artifacts — in other words, neutralize their powers so they cannot harm civilians, and bring them back to the Warehouse where they are cataloged and stored in a very complex library system. Each mission differs in severity, but agents are told when they're hired that their life expectancy isn't long. Pete lasting 5+ years on the job is unusual, but then again he was kind of born for this job.

Character's personality: Pete is as charismatic as he is childish. He is a self-proclaimed comic book junky (his sister got him started on the hobby soon after his father died, and he has since read almost everything under the sun), a fan of Westerns and Classic movies, and a pop culture nut. He's frequently heard quoting some movie, song, or obscure reference, and making jokes when he feels uncomfortable. This lends itself to his "manchild" persona, and many of his fellow agents and coworkers look at him like a big kid or an excitable Labrador puppy or both depending on the day. He can be frustrating when you really just want him to be serious and pay attention, but when you need a laugh there's no better person to have around.

Pete has a huge heart and no lack of compassion. He will fight to bloody knuckles for his teammates, whom he sees as his family. He's incredibly generous and giving with both his time and his resources, and loyal to those who have earned his trust. He has an addictive personality, something AA is helping him with — at least so far as his vices are concerned. Pete loves cookies, and no manner of therapy is ever going to change that. He can't resist pressing buttons, the bigger and redder the better. When you tell him not to touch something, that's the only thing he can think about. Pete has a touch of ADHD, and can be hard to keep up with and manage. Bless Myka Bering for her almost endless patience.

Character's skills/abilities/powers: Pete is pretty much baseline human, the only exception being his "vibes." The strength and specificity of each vibe differs quite a bit, likely for narrative reasons. Sometimes they act as a sort of "spidey sense" alerting him to dangers that are coming his way; other times they're just a bad feeling, like a premonition of something terrible about to happen.

Other skills include: firearms training; reading lips; +10 charisma (it's amazing the ladies love him as much as they do when he tells so many boob jokes); and various other skills picked up during his stint with the marines and the Boy Scouts.

Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: His Secret Service badge, a Farnsworth (communication device, which won't work unless there are other Farnsworths aboard), and a Tesla (which operates basically like a stun gun). He'll also probably have some manner of food on him, but I digress.

Are you bringing your character to [community profile] ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: Nope, he's as fresh as the morning dew!

If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s): AS CLEAN AS THE NEWLY FALLEN SNOW, AS PURE AS THE...

Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? Pete is coming fresh off a life of endless wonder, and is not adjusting well to the idea that the career, family, and home he's built for the last five years is going to be ending soon. I think the Enterprise will be good for him, as it will give him new adventures and people to focus on. It helps that some of his teammates are also aboard. Beyond that, I think playing Pete in this environment will be a hoot. He is a giant nerd, enthusiastic and big-hearted, and I can see him easily filling the role of protector in any capacity he can, whether it's one-on-one with other passengers or in an official capacity. Hire him, Picard! He's always wanted to work for Starfleet!

Writing Sample #1:
Pete's glad that Artie has finally given up on telling him not to touch things. It makes sneaking around the Warehouse when they're not needed on a case a lot easier. Which doesn't mean that his solo ping pong matches against Lewis Carroll's Mirror aren't often interrupted by an oatmeal-scotchie-scented tirade from the big guy himself, but at least the lectures have gone down from 10 a day to 10 a week. Pete will take it.

He's cruising down one of the aisles on the Radio Flyer, eating a drumstick (of the frozen variety, the ren faire was months ago and meat hocks are hard to juggle going at a steady 15mph) when something catches his eye. He gets his best Bond villain impression on. "Helloooo."

Hopping up to the shelving unit, he's met with one of the most beautiful visions his eyes have ever seen. If anybody claims they heard a high-pitched hummina-hummina-hummina he won't be able to deny it. There, in all its glory, is the first issue Fantastic Four, published 1961.

There is no way he's not touching that.

He double-checks his hands to be sure there's no ice cream on his fingers, and reads the monitor display directly underneath. "May cause uncanny abilities, amazing heroism, and fantastic feats of strength. Also causes delusions of grandeur." Beat. "Awesome."

His hand reaches for the issue.

"No no no no no!" Artie slaps Pete's hand away hard enough to make it smart. Whimpering, Pete shakes his hand and pouts at Artie. "The last thing we need is you swinging across the Warehouse and shooting fire from your hands!"

"Come on, Artie!" Pete whines, bouncing on the balls of his feet. "Who doesn't need that? I promise to only use my powers for good. After all, with great power, comes great--"

"Not gonna happen!"

Damn it. "When do you sleep?"

"Never, Agent Lattimer," Artie replies, polishing the screen before dragging Pete away. "Never."
